Enjoy this calming, tactile practice and let your imagination run wild as we experiment with color, form and texture.

Layers Of Life : Improvisational Collage And Stitching

NEW WORKSHOP with @specksandkeepings // Improv fabric collage and stitching // Sep 22 @ 3pm EST 🗓

What I have long loved about Debby’s work is how nuanced and layered it is. Then we get to talking on the phone one day and she tells me she is often thinking about textures she’s seen around town. Makes total sense!

So we get to talking and I’m getting more and more excited about her process, and she SO KINDLY agrees to lead a two-part workshop for my #patreon community 🙌 I couldn’t believe it. Please come join us on Sep 22 for our first session! Open to all patrons 🙇‍♂️ It will be recorded if you can’t attend at that time. The second follow-up session is Oct 20. I think that’s it. Feel free to write with any questions!

This is a 2 day in person residency in my home available most of the year, book at Vawaa.

Wandering the City Artists: Sarajo Frieden & Debra Weiss

Wandering the City is a collaborative installation that draws from both artists’ shared interest in improvisational looking as they engage with the city around them. Fiber art, woven textiles, painted papers, muslin and canvas, with layers of pattern and texture, act as visual representations for what they see, feel and hear as they wander through their neighborhoods.

Building A Village: Connecting Our Spaces With Stitching and Appliqué

For 5 consecutive Sundays (March 21st - April 18th) Debra will lead a communal project, where we'll create a collaborative textile art piece, using stitching and appliqué techniques. Participants will each receive a kit with a 22" x 22" linen cotton square and 3 small geometric shapes of fabric. The kit will also contain 2 prepaid priority mail envelopes. You'll create your own house using any technique, and then you will use the prepaid envelope to mail this work-in-progress to another person in the group. We'll repeat this twice. As the materials move in rotation, you will each end up with a piece containing homes from 2 other members of group. Debra will then guide you to unite these houses and create a village scene.

Mending: Adding Beauty to Function

Instead of throwing away a torn or damaged piece of clothing or fabric participants will be shown how the damage offers the opportunity to create a new surface design enhancing the beauty of an object while creating a story relaying it's history. We will take time to think about and explore the versatility and strength of various mending techniques, emphasizing the meditative rhythm of hand stitching and the pleasure of having time to make and mend.

Slow Stitching Fabric Coasters

Live from Los Angeles, United States

On Saturday, September 26, at 2:30 PM EST, join VAWAA and textile artist Debra Weiss to learn various techniques of layering and stitching.

Debra has always worked with her hands. Her process is very intuitive and she rarely uses a sewing machine. As a textile artist, she composes with color, much like a painter does, but works in fiber processes: crocheting, stitching, knitting, knotting, layering and weaving.

In this session, we will learn how to layer, appliqué and reverse appliqué – both techniques that can be used for mending. We will use hemming stitch, running stitch, blanket stitch and learn how to use the stitches to embellish the piece. Using these techniques, we will complete fabric coaster/s handmade by each one of us.

All levels welcome, no experience required. Limited to 18 participants.

Joining us from a different time zone? Be sure to convert the time.

Those who attend the live session can purchase the recording at an additional fee.
